Thierry Paret, FAIA is an American Architect of Haitian descent who was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Thierry has comprehensive background in all phases of Architectural practice gained in the past 28 years working for leading practices in the USA, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Ireland. He has both won and been a finalist in International Architectural Design competitions. Thierry has worked on project types ranging from master planning to commercial, cultural, mixed-use, pharmaceutical, research, retail and residential.

Mr. Paret’s approach to design starts with careful analysis of key issues, assets and opportunities. In early stages of a project he emphasizes exploration and identification of options. His elegant designs are developed in close collaboration with the Client and their requirements alongside the project’s site context, commercial requirements, sustainability and the local culture. His projects have been featured in multiple publications.

 

He founded the American Institute of Architects Chapter for the Middle East and North Africa and served as its first President from 2010 to 2012. Mr. Paret also served as President of the AIA International Region encompassing leading all the members living and working outside the USA.

In 2014 the American Institute of Architects elevated Thierry Paret to its prestigious College of Fellows. This honor is bestowed to architects who have made a significant contribution to architecture and society and who have achieved a standard of excellence in the profession.  Only 2% of American architects belong to the elite College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects. Mr. Paret is also a Richard Upjohn Fellow in the American Institute of Architects.

 

Thierry previously sat on the AIA National Membership Committee,and the National Board Community Committee. He is the 2019-2021 Chair for the AIA Global Development Strategic Task Force and is an expert member for NCARB's International Working Group. Thierry is a registered architect in the USA, United Kingdom and Ireland. His leadership qualities in the profession are known both in the United States, Middle East  Asia, Africa, Latin America and Europe. Thierry previously worked for and with well known firms AECOM/Ellerbe Beckett, Grimshaw and Partners and HDR.

In 2012 Thierry Paret was honored as the 41st most influential person in the Middle East and North African construction industry by Construction Week Magazine Power 100. That same year he was also voted the 16th most influential architect in the Middle East by Architect Middle East Magazine.

Thierry was elected to the AIA National Board as one of six Directors at the executive level of the organization and served in that capacity in 2016 and 2017. Thierry served on the AIA's 2018 Gold Medal and Firm of the year jury.
